INVASIVE SPECIES

Help protect the habitat!

NON-NATIVE “ALIEN” PLANTS

Plants such as Multiflora Rose, Japanese Knotweed, and Mile-a-Minute weed, threaten the SWT and the native plants and animals that live in the trail’s surrounding habitat.

These plants:

  • Impact recreation, by becoming overgrown along the trail

  • Overtake and replace native vegetation used by wildlife

  • Reduce native biodiversity along the trail

  • Choke out desirable trees and shrubs

  • Negatively impact the ecosystem

We need your help:

  • To ensure everyone can continue to enjoy the SWT

  • To ensure native plant and animal species can thrive in the natural areas along the trail

If you love the SWT, and would like to help fight off these “alien” attackers, please consider joining the Susquehanna Weed Warriors!

(Species identification and removal training will be provided)

We need your help combating a trail predator, the multi-flora rose.

The rose has infested large sections alongside the trail.  We push it back with our brush cutter, but it grows fast and shoots are again reaching over the trail surface.  If you have encountered a rose's thorn you know that pain and blood will result especially if you try to pull away.  The thorns also puncture bike tires.

How can you help protect others and yourself?  When you are out for a walk on the trail, take along a hand trimmer and leather gloves. When you encounter a rose shoot extending over the trail trim it back and continue your walk.  It's as simple as that.

THANK YOU!
